Information about April Fools Day

If April Fools' Day in Russia usually begins with the morning hoax, like: "Wake up! Overslept for work!", the U.S. media, just for fun, reveal the annual list of the most stupid persons of the country.

But in America, unlike other countries in the world, the media are obliged to warn that they are joking.

Fun Facts about April Fools Day

For example, for several years in a row, Michael Jackson received the “honor” to be called Fool number one of the country. It has become a tradition that the first U.S. officials are in the list of the top three fools. Among them, the name of U.S. President George W. Bush regularly occupied different positions.

Even more massive April Fool jokes and hoaxes are known to have been spread via the media.

For example, on April 1, 2001 the state of Vermont found itself in the focus of attention of all the U.S.A. Throughout the day in the highlight of television news was Jason Aldos, the spokesman for the agricultural department of Vermont, who reported the first documented outbreak of foot and mouth disease on a Vermont farm. In some cities of Vermont and Massachusetts people refrained from buying meat and some meat shops were closed altogether.

April Fools Facts

One more example. For cigarettes traders April, 1 turned out to be a most profitable day: their merchandise was bought up in blocks. The American Legacy Foundation announcement, performed in the typical for the U.S. notice about withdrawing certain goods from the market. It informed about the "immediate withdrawal of all brands of cigarettes, which will be in force until the manufacturers create such types of cigarette which do not cause any hazard for health." After a pause, a female voice added: "April 1 - do not believe anyone."

Many smokers either did not listen till the end of the announcement, or they just did not pay attention to the last sentence, or else they did not realize that the American Legacy Foundation was one of the many anti-smoking organizations in the USA.
