President Lincoln s Birthday

Until the mid-70s in most states of America February 12 was celebrated as the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.

Now this holiday is marked on the third Monday in February jointly with the birthday of George Washington, the first President, and is called Presidents' Day. However, up to this day, many residents of the United States do not forget the tradition of celebrating February 12. Lincoln's Birthday is celebrated at the level of the national holiday in the states of Connecticut, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey and New York.

Abraham Lincoln, whose portrait can be seen on the five-dollar bill and whose name was given to the automobile company, occupies a special place among the prominent political figures of the world. The Law of Homestead which gave every American citizen the right to obtain a plot of land that eventually became his property, and the abolition of slavery was an outstanding contribution to the development of a genuine individual freedom.

Lincoln knew and loved his people, and American citizens responded with universal support. On November 8, 1864 at the next regular elections he was elected President for a second term.

His life ended tragically – with a shot in the head at Ford's Theatre. A few years after the death of Abraham Lincoln the memorial to the President was established in Washington, DC. And every year, on Abraham Lincoln birthday, a wreath is laid there.

Evaluating the role of Lincoln in history, the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy said: "He was what Beethoven was in music, Dante – in poetry, Rafael - in painting, Christ – in the philosophy of life."
