Doctors Day history

For the first time celebrating National Doctor's Day in the U.S. was held in 1991, after the legal approval of the National Doctor's Day by the Congress and the Senate in 1990. The resolution on the celebration was signed on October 30, 1990 by President George W. Bush.

But in fact, Doctor's Day had been celebrated long before the official America recognized this day as a national holiday. Its history takes us back to March 30, 1933, in Winder, the state of Georgia.

The idea of celebrating Doctor's Day belongs to Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond. The first Doctors Day celebration was marked by sending greeting cards to doctors and laying flowers the graves of deceased doctors. The symbol of the Doctor's Day in America is the red carnation.

March 30 was chosen as the date of the holiday to commemorate the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia by the American physician and pharmacist Crawford Williamson Long, (1815-1878) in 1842.

March 30, 1958 the U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution establishing National Doctors Day.
