      The holiday falls on March 17. St. Patrick's Day is a celebration of Irish culture and traditions in America. At this time in America there are many exhibitions, dancing concerts, music theatre performances. Many people participate in dyeing rivers in green color. In Chicago the whole river is traditionally dyed in green.

      The best places to celebrate St Patrick s Day is New York city.Annually in New York a parade is held on 5th Avenue near St. Patrick's Cathedral with one exception if March 17 falls on Sunday. In that case the parade is cancelled.

      On this day the ban on eating meat is lifted, as well as drinking alcohol, which is otherwise prohibited at Lent. Historians say that the color originally associated with St. Patrick's Day is blue. For some reason, in recent years the popularity of green has grown considerably and substituted the use blue color. The most famous symbol of St. Patrick's Day, shamrock, is also known as trefoil.

      People are very serious about dress up for this day. They are dressed in green clothes, green socks. They walk along the streets and drink famous Irish drinks – Jameson Whiskey, Guinness beer and Bailey’s Irish Cream.

      In cities with large population of Irish origin St. Patrick's Day is great fun. Organizing parades, music and songs performances, Irish food and drink, "wearing green," are but a few of the festive highlights. There are also activities for children, crafts, games and painting. Typically, parents dress up their kids in green color.
