Veterans Day is a holiday to honor the 25 million of military veterans. It is a federal and state holiday which falls on November 11, annually. On November 11, 1918, America signed a truce with Germany. It happened in Rethondes, a small village in northern France. The truce led to the end of World War I. A year later, November 11, 1919, was proclaimed a day to remember the soldiers who died during World War I. On Armistice Day soldiers who were in the war marched in parades in their cities.

Veterans Day information

Many people ask who created Veterans Day. The first Veterans Day was held by President of the United States Woodrow Wilson in 1919. While many servicemen were returning from all over the world and because there was almost no food in the country, the President held a celebratory dinner at the White House for the military. On the table stood raviolis. They recently been introduced as easily cooked foodstuff.

These days, the ravioli is a special dish on Veterans Day. Many people visit the monuments to those who gave their lives in service to the country. A large number of memorials can be found in Washington, D.C. Most Americans are not relevant to this historical day, but they are given a day off. All government offices are closed, banks, schools, etc. Also mail does not work on this day. Those who have to work are offered extra payment for the inconvenience.

Veterans Day slogans:
"Freedom is never free."
"In war, there are no unwounded soldiers."
"I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask, 'Mother, what is war?'"
"When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?"

What to Do on Veterans Day

Veterans Day gift is the best way to surprise a veteran. If among your friends is the one who served in the army, the air force, the navy, the National Guard, or in other armed forces, it would be nice if you made a small gift and tell them how happy and grateful you are for their defending the country.

Although most of the soldiers did not fight in wars, the support and recognition they receive from ordinary citizens will make them very pleased. People usually wear Veterans Day ribbons and, flags in hand, go to the parade. On Veterans Day Americans bring Veterans Day wreath to the monuments to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers and show their respect for the living veterans.
