US Coast Guard information

On August 4, the professional holiday - United States Coast Guard Day is celebrated in the U.S. This day was established on the initiative of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in 1790.

On that date, Congress, guided by Hamilton, authorized the building of a fleet of the country. At that time, it consisted of only 10 patrol boats.

The Coast Guard is the smallest part of the U.S. Armed Forces and is responsible for enforcing maritime laws. Also it’s task is to protect the population, the environment, economy and security of the United States in any sea region in which those interests are threatened, including international waters, the U.S. coastline, ports and inland waters. The Coast Guard is controlled by U.S. Federal government.

For several years the resort town of Grand Haven (Michigan) has been a sponsor of the annual Coast Guard Festival. Grand Haven is also known to the public as "the city of Marine Guards."
