Origin of Sweetest Day

Annually, on the third Saturday of October the United States celebrates Sweetest Day.

This tradition originated in Cleveland in 1922, when Herbert Birch Kingston, philanthropist, and a candy factory employee, decided to help the destitute orphans, poor people and all those who have wretched existence.

Kingston gathered a small group of residents, and with the help of his friends, they organized the distribution of small gifts to somehow support the hungry people who had been forgotten and ignored by the government.

During the first day of sweet movie star Ann Pennington distributed sweet gifts to 2200 Cleveland newspaper boys as a token of gratitude for their work.

Another popular film star Theda Bara distributed 10 000 boxes of chocolates to Cleveland hospital patients and to those who came to see her film in a local movie house.

Sweetest Day holiday

Originally Sweetest Day was mainly observed in central and western U.S. - Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. In recent years the popularity of the holiday has grown considerably and now the geography of celebration spans other parts of the United States, in particular, the north-eastern part of the country.

The State of Ohio - the home of Sweetest Day – is the record holder of sweet stuff sales on this day. California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois fill in the next places in the top ten sales list.

This holiday is a great opportunity (along with Valentine's Day) to express romantic feelings and friendship. On this day it is acceptable to present chocolates or roses, or anything associated with sweet stuff, on the assumption that love is sweet like a chocolate!
