Oatmeal festival

"Oatmeal, sir" - this classic British phrase is, probably, familiar to everyone. Oatmeal is both a British dish and a national peculiarity as well. In English-speaking countries crushed oats (oatmeal), is known as the "Quaker oats". The flakes, made from that cereal are called just the same too. However, not only the foggy Albion can boast of its love for this wonderful dish.

Each year, on the second Friday of April a three-day festival dedicated to oatmeal starts in the American town of St. George (the state of South Carolina). And it is called no less than the World Festival of Oatmeal. That's it!

The first festival was held in 1985. It happened after Bill Hunter, the manager of the «Piggly Wiggly» supermarket, noticed that the residents of St. George buy much more oatmeal than other cities, and eat it with invariable pleasure and appetite. Thus the Festival of oatmeal was born – as a reminder of healthy food to the indulging in hamburgers and growing too fat Americans...

The Festival was quite a success, and gradually its traditions were formed. Today it is a cheerful holiday, where you can not only eat oatmeal to your heart’s content, but also compete in speedy eating and even wallow in porridge.

The music playing throughout the festival and dancing contests only stir up the participants’ appetite. Also, the guests are invited to taste the cakes and other dishes cooked with the addition of oatmeal as an integral part of local culinary culture.

The number of participants of the festival grows each year and amounts to more than a dozen thousand people. In addition to receiving an honorary title, the winners of the contests are awarded special grants. Can you beat that? - Not just relish the festive oatmeal, but also receive a prize into the bargain!
