English people celebrate Christmas on December, 25. It is a family and religion holiday. This interesting holiday has a long history. It was a festival long before the conversion to Christianity. People began the New Year and the new life on that day. This day was called – Mother’s day.
Many Christmas customs go back to pagan times, also the history of Christians gifts we can find in that time. Christmas is a religion holiday, that’s why all state buildings close at one o’clock. London and big cities are decorated with coloured lights and wonderful toys.

The house is decorated with holly and mistletoe under which the boys kiss the girls. People paint their Christmas cards, they write their own poems and songs. There is also one tradition: the main dish on the table is a turkey. English people buy Christmas cookie tins for their children.
For this day children and students learn Christmas carols. And they go from house to house, sing carols and collect money or candies. There is a big Christmas tree in every big city. In England the main tree stands in Trafalgar Square. There is over 15 feet high tree and brightly decorated.
